LIGHT, SHADOW, AND SHADE
Photography is often described as the art of painting with light, but it's the interplay of light, shadow, and shade that gives an image depth, mystery, and soul.
Light reveals. We chase moments of light–clarity, joy, and inspiration. It sharpens, draws the eye, and brings subjects to life. But without shadow, light is flat. Shadows define; they shape the light giving us meaning. And without shade, there is no place to rest. Shade softens, between the extremes, inviting the mind, body, and soul to rest in its gentle refuge.
To do photography well, one must honor all three: to let light illuminate, to let shadow define, and to let shade soften.

Guest Artist: Davide China
Davide is a New York Fine Art portrait photographer now living in Gilroy. When speaking to the 6th On 7th Photography Workshop members, I overheard him say, “Once you see the image, it’s too late.” A few puzzled over his words for a moment before the light of understanding flipped on.
The work he shares for this exhibition speaks to his method of combining common materials, which we so easily disregard, with his subject's beauty, softness, and simplicity.
